Meet Julia Melinek
Private Independent Midwife in London

I am a registered midwife with a First class honours degree from King's College London and experience at a major London teaching hospital with an outstanding CQC rating. Today, I work exclusively as a private midwife, offering unhurried, personalised continuity of care throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period.

 

Alongside my midwifery training, I am an experienced doula, hypnobirthing and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) practitioner. This combination has shaped my approach to maternity care: clinically safe and evidence-based, but also warm, holistic and wonderfully oxytocin rich.

Every Birth Has Its Own Story​​

Over the years, I have supported hundreds of women through the various stages of pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period, and no two journeys have ever been the same. I have supported hypno-births, water births and home births; hospital births with epidurals; planned and unplanned Caesarean (C-section) births; VBACs and HBACs. I have cared for teenagers, surrogates, women who feel confident and excited about birth, women terrified of it, and women whose carefully made plans have gone completely out of the window at the last minute.  I have even supported a woman giving birth outside a Costa coffee shop!

 

Whatever path your birth takes, my role is to help you feel safe, informed, respected and supported throughout. I will always be your cheerleader, but I am also your midwife, continually assessing the wellbeing of you and your baby. I am guided by you and will offer you the information you need to make informed choices. When hospital care or intervention become the safest option I will be right by your side.

 

Supporting the Emotional Side of Pregnancy and Birth

Birth is not only a physical experience. Previous trauma, anxiety, emotional stories and media scaremongering can have a profound effect on how a woman feels about pregnancy and giving birth again, or for the first time.

 

I have experience supporting women affected by birth trauma and tokophobia (fear of childbirth), and I am trained in the Three Step Rewind technique and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), which can be used to help women process and neutralise a previous traumatic experience and reframe it in a way that will help them moving forward.

Why Midwifery Means So Much to Me​

​I have three beautiful children of my own, all  born with the assistance of angelic midwives. I know personally how powerful it can be to have a midwife beside you who makes you feel safe, cared for and believed in. My particular passions include hypnobirthing, water-birth and home-birth but ultimately I am passionate about all birth, because a Beautiful Birth isn't defined by where it happens or whether everything goes according to plan. It is about being heard, respected, supported and cared for throughout.

PUSH - Celebrating Midwifery

My passion for midwifery extends beyond my own practice. I created PUSH, a multi award-winning short film that uses humour and parody to explore the parallels between making a baby and having a baby, while also highlighting the importance of protecting women and the environments in which they give birth. 

​

Since its release, PUSH has been viewed almost a quarter of a million times and has travelled far beyond anything I originally imagined. It has now been used by birth educators and midwifery schools around the world and has even been translated into many other languages. 

​

The film has received multiple awards including the New York Cinematography Award, selection for the Women's International Film Festival and the London Worldwide Comedy Film Festival as well as the King's College London Birthing With Colour Midwifery Award, which I am particularly proud of. 

​

At its heart, PUSH is a playful but powerful celebration of what I love about this profession: the privilege of standing beside women at one of the most extraordinary and intimate moments of their lives, whilst also advocating for the spaces and systems that keep them safe.​

​

Professional Registration & Insurance​

I am registered and accredited with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and am a member of both the Royal College of Midwives and The Royal College of Nursing. I hold professional indemnity cover for my antenatal and postnatal practice through the Royal College of Nursing, with my intrapartum care packages insured through MID Midwifery Indemnity Insurance.
